A Bruno Fernandes hattrick proved to be the difference between the two teams as the Red Devils continue their march to the crows.

In what has been a truly dismal season for the Red Devils, the Europa League provides them with the only chance of winning a silverware this season. That would be a small positive in a period full of negatives and that is what the team will be eyeing.
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim & co. are working towards reinforcing the squad next summer. As per Gazeta do Urubu, Man Utd are in the running to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes despite the player close to a move to Liverpool.
Gomes has been very impressive for Wolves since moving to the club from Flamengo in 2023. In 30 games across all competitions so far this season, the 24-year-old has scored four goals and provided two assists. Predominantly a central midfielder, he can also play in defensive midfield.
Man Utd’s midfield with the setup that Ruben Amorim deploys needs players with a massive engine and this is where Joao Gomes fits in. The £50m-rated Brazilian international has what it takes to be an all-round player in the Portuguese tactician’s project.
From the data, it is very obvious that Joao Gomes is very involved in defensive actions on the pitch and often tries to win the ball back for his team.
This is a trait that is very important to play in Ruben Amorim’s system at Manchester United.
However, further inspection into these defensive numbers tells us a story about Gomes.
As much as the Brazilian has the desire to win the ball back for his team, he will have to improve the accuracy at which he manages to do that currently.
The plot clearly shows us that although Joao Gomes attempts a large number of defensive duels per 90 which is well over the median of around 6.4 per 90, his success rate ranks below the Premier League median of 58%.
This is something that Man Utd will have to factor in before they make a concrete push to sign Gomes.
There is no doubt that the 24-year-old is talented and can improve in this regard but let’s wait and see if the Red Devils are able to pip Liverpool to his signature.
