Ruben Amorim has revealed what Sir Alex Ferguson told him just before Manchester United’s dismal 3-1 loss to Brighton.

It appeared that United had turned a corner at the turn of the new year but Sunday’s performance at Old Trafford showed they still have a long way to go as they were outclassed by the Seagulls.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, head coach Amorim made an astonishing admission: ‘We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United.

‘In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won two. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me.

‘We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.’

Since replacing Erik ten Hag in the dugout, Amorim has won just five of his first 15 games, losing seven, results that have left his side 13th in the Premier League.

There were emotional scenes before kick-off as the Red Devils paid tribute to club legend Denis Law, who passed away on Friday evening at the age of 84.

Legendary United manager Ferguson laid a wreath for his fellow Scot on the Old Trafford pitch but before making his way to his seat, he stopped to have a chat with Amorim.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the loss, the Portuguese revealed part of what the 83-year-old told him: ‘Keep positive.’

The advice didn’t seem to sink in on Sunday however, with Amorim left despairing at how poor the performance was against the Seagulls, though he has refused to single out any players for criticism.

United can get back to winning ways on Thursday when they host Rangers in a Europe League ‘Battle of Britain’, before travelling to Fulham on Sunday for their next Premier League clash.

Ferguson also had a chat with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, who revealed: ‘Sir Alex Ferguson asked me take care of Danny Welbeck, who worked with him at United and so I will have to do that.

‘Very special, in my squad is one of his favourite players. We had a small exchange several weeks ago. One of the best coaches ever.’
