Manchester United may have to pay well above Francisco Trincão’s £50m release clause if they decide to move forward with their pursuit of him.
Trincao has been mentioned to be on United’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, with Ruben Amorim planning a squad overhaul.
Many of the current players have struggled to adapt to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system. However, this is unlikely to be an issue for Trincao, given his experience with it under Amorim at Sporting CP.
Primarily a right-sided attacker, Trincao has been in fine form this season, registering an impressive eight goals and 12 assists in 26 Liga Portugal appearances. Across all competitions, the 25-year-old has managed nine goals and 15 assists.
He was on fire for Portugal during the international break, scoring two crucial goals to help the Seleção overturn a first-leg deficit, defeat Denmark, and reach the UEFA Nations League semi-finals.
A report covered by The Peoples Person earlier this month relayed that Amorim is determined to be reunited with Trincao this summer. More recently, it was claimed that the United hierarchy are willing to bring the Viana do Castelo-born footballer to Old Trafford.
However, according to The Sun, United may be forced to cough up significantly more than the player’s £50m release clause.
The increase stems from the deal Sporting made with Trincao’s former club, Barcelona, when he moved to Estádio José Alvalade in 2023.
The Sun explain that Barca retain 50 per cent of their old player’s transfer rights, and Sporting are keen to make at least £35m from his sale. This could force United to pay an extra £20m on top of the £50m release clause to secure his signing.
The news outlet adds, “Amorim is convinced Trincao, with the benefit of that season at Molineux in 2021-22, will be able to make a swift adaptation to the Prem.”
Trincao, of course, had a disappointing spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers, managing three goals in 30 appearances.
He spent just one season at Molineux before making the move to Sporting, where he has revived his career.
