Wolves make Matheus Cunha transfer 'promise' amid Manchester United interest

Wolves have vowed to keep hold of Matheus Cunha in January amid strong interest from Manchester United.
Having impressed during an initial loan, Cunha joined Wolves on a permanent basis in the summer of 2023 and the 25-year-old hasn’t looked back, racking up 21 goals and 13 assists in his opening 49 games.
A stunning brace in Wolves’ 4-1 victory over Fulham at the weekend put Cunha’s name further in the spotlight and a number of top teams have been alerted by the Brazilian’s sparking form.
Tottenham and Manchester United are believed to be keeping close tabs on Cunha’s situation at Molineux, with both clubs on the hunt for attacking reinforcements this winter.
Pedro Neto and Max Kilman left Wolves to join Chelsea and West Ham respectively last summer and speculation has been mounting that Cunha could be set to follow the duo out the exit door before too long.
But according to talkSPORT, Wolves director of football Matt Hobbs has ‘promised’ head coach Gary O’Neil that Cunha will not be sold when the January transfer window opens for business.
The sought-after forward – who has been capped 11 times by the Brazil national team – still has three years remaining on his current contract with Wolves.
In the summer, Cunha insisted he was in no hurry to seek an escape route out of Wolves, with rumours swirling of a possible move to United.
‘We see this rush but I’m very happy at Wolves,’ he told Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte when quizzed on United’s reported interest.
‘My focus is on resting and making the most of my break with my family.
‘I’m very happy at Wolves. The focus now is to have better seasons and help the club. God willing, I will continue on this path.’
In the aftermath of Cunha’s double at Craven Cottage, O’Neil sang the Brazilian’s praises, even comparing Wolves’ talisman to the likes of Bernardo Silva and Martin Odegaard.
'Everyone knows how important he is to us, but also important to recognise the work that he's put in since he has been here. This isn't the Matheus Cunha that arrived at Wolves,’ the Wolves manager said.
'I love working with him because the penny has definitely dropped that he can be a top player. There were gaps before and he works every single day to be as good as he can be.
'I love working with him. His talent is incredible, obviously. But if you watch the top players, they're able to do it week in week out. Watch people like Bernardo Silva, Martin Odegaard.
'They're all top with or without the ball and Matheus, the numbers he's producing at the minute are up there with everybody.'
'He's going to stay at Wolves for as long as possible, firstly. But after that, there's no limit to where he can go.'
