Andre Onana has been urged to consider leaving Manchester United next summer if his form under Ruben Amorim does not improve.

Onana was signed by Erik ten Hag from Inter Milan in July 2023 and was seen as the long-term replacement for the ageing David de Gea.

Since then, he has endured mixed fortunes at Old Trafford, regularly making impressive reflex saves but also prone to the occasional mishap.

The 28-year-old’s position in the team came under the spotlight once again recently when he considered straight from a Wolves corner as the Red Devils slipped to their third defat in a row.

With reports now emerging that the club could dip into the market to seek competition for Onana, former United goalkeeper Massimo Taibi has urged the Cameroonian to consider his long-term future at the club.

Taibi endured a nightmare spell at Old Trafford, making just four appearances for United and leaving after one season following a series of high-profile clangers.

And the 54-year-old Italian suggested that Onana, like himself, may not be suited to the English game and could return to his best by moving elsewhere.

‘I'd be straight to the point and tell him, 'Andre, you are one of the best keepers in Europe but in the Premier League, you are under-performing’,’ Taibi told The Sun.

”Block out criticism, do some soul-searching, press the reset and go again. And if things don't change by June, move on'.

‘I think subconsciously the United environment isn't ideal for him and when a marriage is showing cracks, it's pointless to continue.

‘Sometimes things don't work out at a team and it's best to go separate ways, which would not be a failure.’

Aksed why Onana might not be suited to the Premier League, Taibi added: ‘For me he's a strong goalkeeper who finds himself in a situation where he can't show his skills because he is not cut out for the English game.

‘He's only suited to the Prem when it comes to his ball-playing ability and structure.’

While others, including former Premier League striker Chris Sutton, have also criticised Onana, United boss Amorim chose to defend his under-fire keeper following their loss to Wolves on Boxing Day.

‘I think he cannot go to the ball. He’s trying to reach the ball and some guys are not even looking at the ball,’ Amorim said when asked about Wolves’ goal direct from a corner.

‘But I don’t want to focus on that. I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.’
