Rashford returned to the bench on Monday for United’s home defeat to Newcastle.

It ended a four-match absence from the side for the 27-year-old under Ruben Amorim.

However, Rashford remained an unused substitute as his side were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford.

He has now been left out again for the trip to Anfield, with Amorim revealing the reason why prior to kick-off.

The United boss explained, per journalist Fabrizio Romano: “Marcus Rashford is still ill, so he’s not available for the game today.”

It comes after the reason for Rashford’s four-match hiatus from the squad was revealed this week.

According to The Athletic, Amorim was informed last month that Rashford had spent a Friday night out in Manchester less than two days before a match.

His alleged night out came just 48 hours prior to United’s 4-0 victory over Everton.

Rashford was subsequently left out of the starting line-up for the defeat to Arsenal in the Red Devils’ next match.

The academy graduate has since suggested he is ready for a ‘fresh challenge’ away from the club.

His current contract still has three-and-a-half years remaining, though, following an extension last year.

So far this season, Rashford has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 24 appearances across all competitions.

Of those, three strikes have been in his six matches under Amorim.

The Portuguese took over in November after replacing the departed Erik ten Hag.
