Rangers had joined Division 2 of the London League, and later in the season on 25th March 1897, they faced Fulham at Harvest Road. The following match report later appeared in the Sporting Life:
About 1,000 spectators watched this match at Harvest-road, West Kilburn yesterday.
Fulham started play facing a very strong wind, but in the first minute they forced a corner, which came to nought.
The home team then had all the play, and pressed repeatedly, forcing several corners, which were, however, fruitless.
A penalty kick awarded to the Rangers after half-an-hour’s play resulted in McKenzie banging the ball into the Fulham goal.
A few minutes later, Davies with a beautiful side shot, added the Rangers' second point, and the interval arrived in favour of the home team by two to nothing.
In the second half the Rangers had all the play and would have scored many times but for the splendid goalkeeping of May.
Nothing further resulted and the final was – Queen’s Park Rangers, two goals; Fulham, nothing. Referee, Mr A. J. Neale.
Two days later they travelled to Slough for a friendly match.
