At the start of the season Aberdeen were being tipped to challenge Rangers and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Now the disastrous Dons are hanging on to retain a top six place.

Aberdeen are now without a Scottish Premiership win since November and are licking their wounds after bring thrashed 3-0 at the hands of St Mirren at Pittodrie.

But whilst Aberdeen stand no chance of challenging the likes of Rangers in the Scottish top flight, they reckon they've got a chance in the transfer market.

Aberdeen want Lyall Cameron

Aberdeen are reportedly looking to hijack Rangers' bid to sign out-of-contract Dundee star Lyall Cameron.

According to Sky Sports, Aberdeen are interested in signing Cameron this month as the player's contract ticks down at Dens Park.

Rangers are reportedly in talks with Lyall Cameron's representatives and are trying to strike a pre-contract deal for the player ahead of the new season.

Whilst the Gers could then 'accelerate' the January signing of the midfielder, Dundee are yet to receive an approach from any interested party.

The reports of Aberdeen interest come after Dundee cup-tied Lyall Cameron by playing the midfielder in the 1-0 victory over Dundee United last weekend.

Cameron has been one of the top performers in the Scottish Premiership this season, netting five goals and laying on four assists for Dundee in the competition.

Dundee manager on future of 'extremely talented' playmaker

Lyall Cameron has previously claimed he 'wishes he could play for a club like Rangers' during a Dundee visit to Ibrox Stadium earlier in the season.

Despite this, Aberdeen clearly feel they've got a chance of convincing Cameron that his future lies at Pittodrie as the Gers promise to target more homegrown players.

Dundee manager Tony Docherty also hasn't given up hope Cameron will sign on again at Dens Park, even if he admits the 22-year-old is 'exploring his options'.

"It is no surprise when a player like that is out of contract and there will be interest in him," said Docherty.

"It is purely speculation at the moment. We have a lot of players, six or seven who are out-of-contract at the end of the season.

"We have identified, as a club, to offer contract extensions and it is then their prerogative what they do with them.

"A couple have come back and said they will sign and others are exploring their options. Lyall is in that category.

"It is the business we are in and it doesn't surprise me that there is that amount of speculation about Lyall because he is an extremely talented young footballer."
