Ferguson might have to think Rangers Europa League comments from 2022 now he's in charge

Imagine if Barry Ferguson could pull off the unthinkable and win Rangers the Europa League.

He is already a Gers legend but just think where his status would be catapulted to if he brought home a European trophy.

Now, we all know how difficult that would be with Athletic Bilbao the next opponents and some equally tricky ties to follow should the Light Blues get through that one.

But then nobody expected Rangers to get to the final in 2022, nor in 2008 for that matter, and we all know how close it came that night against Eintracht Frankfurt. An Aaron Ramsey penalty away, essentially.

Fergie has already gotten the better of Jose Mourinho and the away performance against Fenerbahce had shades of the same of those games three years ago.

As much of a long shot as it may be, the interim boss may have to reconsider his comments on the Europa League from 2022.

Ferguson played down Europa League importance in 2022

While working as a pundit during his beloved club’s march to the final under his former teammate Gio van Bronckhorst, Ferguson slightly played down the importance for Rangers.

In March 2022, with Gers only three points behind Celtic, he said he would much rather win the league than the European trophy, preferring his club to focus on the bread and butter.

As it turned out, they won neither but they actually came closer with their exploits on the continent.

"I'm saying I would rather win the league. I am the league, 100%," said Ferguson on GO Radio's Football Show at the time.

"It would be great to win the Europa League but you have got to win the league title."

Ferguson will have to alter thoughts on Rangers and Europa League

Rangers News said at the time that he was off the mark with his comment and the manager will now have to place more significance on the Europa League.

It is the club’s only chance of silverware this season and therefore could be his only chance to win a trophy as manager, with no guarantee he will be staying on beyond the summer.

Of course the fact the club were in a title race at the time changes the context slightly in comparison to this campaign, but the European competition will now be his main focus.
