John Souttar is such an important player for Rangers that had the Scotland international not been struck by injury in December, Barry Ferguson probably wouldn't be interim Rangers manager.
The 28-year-old has always been regarded as one of the most promising defenders of his generation in Scotland but injury has hamstrung his career.
Navigating issues at Dundee United and Hearts, Rangers have suffered with the loss of John Souttar at key moments over the last few seasons.
None more so than this campaign, when Rangers' domestic season unravelled after Souttar picked up an injury against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.
Now back in the team, Souttar was imperious as Rangers recorded an away day victory at Celtic Park and the defender has talked up the impact Ferguson has had on the side.
John Souttar on Barry Ferguson's impact at Rangers
Without Souttar marshalling the backline, the likes of Robin Propper have looked lost and it's no exaggeration to say the Scotland star is the first name on the Rangers team sheet when fit.
Finding himself at the heart of a back three under Fergie, this is a position Souttar established himself in with Hearts and a role the centre-back fills with aplomb.
That central role suits Souttar's no-nonsense, aggressive defensive style whilst also allowing the composed centre-back to stroll out of defence knowing he has cover.
Souttar was a big part of Rangers' 'outstanding' display against Celtic and ahead of the international break, reflected on the impact Ferguson has made.
It's about more than just playing football, as Barry Ferguson himself has consistently reiterated, with Souttar crediting the ex-Gers skipper for boosting the character of the dressing room.
"I think the gaffer’s big on character and creating that winning mentality and knowing what it is to play for Rangers," Souttar told the press at full-time.
"He’s massive on that. He’s been there, he’s done it, so you’ve got to listen. He’s drilled that into us every single day, so yeah, he’s big on that front."
Rangers team 'enjoying' working with Ferguson
John Souttar was also asked if he would like to see Barry Ferguson installed as full-time Rangers manager.
Naturally, the centre-back was coy on that situation with the decision to be made far above his head.
But the Rangers defender did have a message from the Ibrox dressing room, insisting everyone in the Rangers squad is enjoying their time working under the gaffer.
"That is way out of my hands," Souttar explained. "I’m sure I’ll leave that.
"All I can say is I enjoy working behind the staff and all the players are as well."
