Gers player ratings v Dundee Utd: 3/10s stink out Ibrox, only three players get pass marks
Yesterday at 01:16 PM
The Rangers team left the Ibrox pitch to a chorus of boos as the club's lacklustre players were held to a 1-1 draw with Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership.
Vaclav Cerny scored a second half equaliser as Rangers struggled to cope with a stubborn Dundee United's timewasting and aggressive tactics.
With few openings in the match, Rangers' first half performance at Ibrox was an abomination with the second half showing a substantial improvement.
Here's how a Rangers team under increasing pressure rated in the drab Scottish Premiership draw with Dundee United.
Rangers player ratings v Dundee United
Jack Butland – 6
Barely had anything to do for the entire 90 minutes but, like the rest of the Rangers defence, was caught completely in no man's land for Sam Dalby's opener.
Dujon Sterling – 6
Now looking to cement himself as Rangers' starting right-back, Dujon Sterling was an energetic and physical presence at in the berth but lacked any real creation.
Was involved in the play but never done enough to make the difference for the side. Still has work to do to make the position his own.
Forced things as the game went on.
John Souttar – 7
The Rangers defensive marshal was hailed by Philippe Clement heading into the game and put in a solid display commanding the Ibrox backline.
Helpless when it came to the Arabs' opener and almost got Rangers level with a lung-busting back post run at the start of the second half.
Did once almost gift a chance to Dundee United but recovered well.
Robin Propper –5
Robin Propper has struggled immensely in a Rangers jersey since moving to Ibrox from Dutch side FC Twente and once again lacked real composure v Dundee United.
Allowed Sam Dalby to drift in and have a free header for the Dundee United opener and looks every inch a relegation-battling Eredivisie defender whenever he plays for Rangers .
Showed some more positive pressing play in the final stages of the game but ultimately, Propper lacks intensity and is another who is not good enough.
Jefte – 5
Brazilian left-back Jefte started the game with tonnes of enthusiasm and was one of Rangers' most creative outlets prior to Dundee United opening the scoring.
Was caught out with the goal, just like Robin Propper, and began to meander with the ball, almost getting caught in possession a number of times in the game.
Connor Barron –7
His usually tigerish and aggressive self, Connor Barron was once again all over the park as he tried to influence the proceedings at Ibrox.
Continues to improve in his link up play and was heavily involved in the good football Rangers did play at the edge of the box. A shining light this season.
Nicolas Raskin –6
Had been on fine form heading into the international break but was much less influential as Rangers' frontline struggled to create anything meaningful against Dundee United.
Perhaps not Raskin's job but the midfielder did have a crack at goal in the first half and did act as a pivot in the middle of the pitch but ultimately, the midfielder was wasteful when it mattered.
Mohamed Diomande –3
Once again struggled to create enough in the 'number ten' role and continues not to do himself any favours with a Rangers support who expect much more.
Is out of form and is in the team courtesy of an injury to Tom Lawrence. Suspect Ianis Hagi might be given the nod in domestic games going forward.
Vaclav Cerny – 8 – Player of the Match
Without a shadow of a doubt Rangers' best player and it's actually quite frightening to think where we would be without the Wolfsburg loanee.
Created any opening Rangers had and consistently took responsibility. Alongside Souttar and Barron, Cerny is one of the only players in the team worth the jersey.
Scored the equaliser after some neat link-up play with Danilo but unsurprisingly tired as the game worn on due to the tactic of passing to Cerny and hoping he'd do something.
Why would the Czech international ever want to move to this mess permanently?
Nedim Bajrami – 5
Cut a tired figure out left for Rangers and the game too often slowed down when it came into Nedim Bajrami at Ibrox, the Albanian struggling to create enough genuine opportunities.
When one of your most creative players toils so tremendously, you are always going to be up against it, and this was a poor afternoon for the playmaker.
Cyriel Dessers – 3
Rangers' number nine cuts an increasingly frustrated figure in the final third of the park and was barely involved in the game with Dundee United before being hooked at half-time.
Took a a neat touch towards the corner flag before fluffing his lines and clearing the ball off for a goal kick. Is not good enough to lead the line for Rangers on a week-by-week basis.
Substitutions
Ianis Hagi – 6
Always showed for the ball and was heavily involved in Rangers' probing play in the second half. Had a rasping shot which stung the palms of the Dundee United goalkeeper. Had another long range effort which flew over the bar. Can't fault the effort, but lacked a killer edge.
Danilo – 6
The introduction of Danilo genuinely changed the game given the Brazilian linked up excellently with Vaclav Cerny for the equaliser. In fact, the Brazilian and the Czech have a strong understanding which you could see throughout the second half. Missed a glorious opportunity to equalise himself and had another effort which was blocked from a rebound. Maybe we'll get to see the £6m striker at his best this time next year. Utterly mollycoddled like the rest of the team.
Ridvan Yilmaz –4
Introduced for Jefte and was enthusiastic if not clearly just returning from injury. First game back at Ibrox in six months and it showed. Didn't show enough quality when it mattered.
Hamza Igamane – 3
A big ask for the Moroccan to come on and change the game but he did cost £1.7m and has barely contributed this season.
Went down holding his face in a desperate attempt to win a free-kick, before stinging the Dundee United keeper's palms with a fine effort in injury time.
