Former Rangers defender Maurice Ross knows what it takes to be a winner at Ibrox.

Coming through the Ibrox academy, the ex-Rangers right-back spent five years in Glasgow's southside and won six major honours, including two league titles.

So as Rangers toil under Philippe Clement this season, it might be worth listening to what Maurice Ross has to say when it comes to the club's shortcomings.

And the ex-Scotland international has had some choice words for one Rangers defender who was front and centre in the club's calamitous 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock.

Maurice Ross slaughters John Souttar

It was a sterling international break for Rangers centre-back John Souttar, who enjoyed a recall to the Scotland starting XI more than two years in the waiting.

Impressing in back-to-back UEFA Nations League clashes against Croatia and then Portugal, Souttar was named POTM after containing the great man Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the 28-year-old was caught short against Kilmarnock as the Rangers defence were caught on the hop and Marley Watkins scored the only goal in a 1-0 defeat.

Whilst Rangers manager Philippe Clement took aim at two of John Souttar's teammates come full-time, the attentions of Maurice Ross were firmly focused on the Ibrox centre-half.

As the Rangers defence was caught out with the ball in behind, Souttar failed to deal with Watkins' physicality and was bullied into giving up the goalscoring chance.

Taking to social media platform X, Ross initially had his head in his hands over the 'Rangers' defender:

Kris Boyd gives Rangers contract update

The criticism of Maurice Ross also comes as Kris Boyd was discussing John Souttar's contract situation at Rangers.

Reports earlier in the season suggested that Souttar is set to handed a new deal by Rangers with the defender considered a key part of the side.

The Gers' defensive form has also been steady; heading into the clash with Kilmarnock, Rangers had kept five clean sheets in their last seven Premiership matches.

As a result, Kris Boyd appeared to confirm the John Souttar contract reports by claiming live on Sky Sports that his sources believe discussions are ongoing.

The ex-Rangers striker's comments about Souttar 'having a mistake in him' also hold extra significance after the disappointing defeat.

"I believe John Souttar is in discussions to sign a new deal," said Boyd. "Which would be a good coup for the club.

"Because I think he's one that has improved.

"Connor Goldson was obviously on the right-hand side last year, Souttar's moved over there in terms of his natural, coming out of the back.

"In terms of his passing, his long diagonals, but defensively he's improved as well.

"Listen, he's got a mistake in him, everybody has, but he has improved.

"But that comes from playing games on a regular basis in his natural position, his natural side."
