It’s silly season again as Rangers prepare to do business in the January transfer window.

Philippe Clement has signings to make in a number of positions, you’d have to imagine, with the Ibrox squad not currently up to par.

Several Gers players have underperformed this term so far as the club sit behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race from back to front and the spine of the team.

Nils Koppen and Clement want a combative midfielder to do the dirty work in the engine room and Leon Belcar has emerged as a target as well as Croatian Marko Soldo, as we exclusively told you.

Robin Propper has struggled at the back, meanwhile, and the Light Blues were left ruing not signing Jose Cordoba in the summer when he was available.

Now, though, club hero Kris Boyd has called for another centre-half to come into the club as he feels that is one priority needed this month.

And he has urged Clement and co. to consider Manchester United and retired Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans to come in and plug a gap until the end of the season.

Boyd plumped for Evans as he feels the veteran centre-back, 36, is someone who could still do a job as he has been doing with the Red Devils for over a year.

Boyd has urged Rangers to consider signing Jonny Evans

“I think when you look at James Tavernier, he is injured for a couple of weeks as well,” Boyd told Sky Sports.

“It was already a patched up back four with the injuries they have had.

“I just look at Rangers, I don't really see any leaders in there. I know there has been rumours of Nathan Patterson, but I can't help but think of somebody like a Jonny Evans or something, maybe until the end of the season.”

Evans has had a stellar career with numerous clubs including United, West Brom, Leicester City and Sunderland.

In total he has played more than 500 matches at elite level and netted his share from the back, too.

Evans was described as “fantastic” by NI boss Michael O’Neill upon his retirement declaration back in August as the head coach explained at the time why he wanted to keep him playing.

Michael O’Neill wanted Evans to continue with Northern Ireland

“He’s a top player, top individual to have in any squad, any team,” said O’Neill.

“The fact that Manchester United still value him as they do is a testament to that as well.

“(The retirement) is disappointing but it’s not something we haven’t discussed.

“We’ve discussed it over the last six months every time we’ve caught up.

“He never really wanted to make that decision but I think he realised to give himself a chance of making a real impact at Manchester United, it meant that the international breaks would probably help physically.

“He has a lot of commitments, three young kids as well. International football, when you’ve been doing it for 18 years, it’s a big commitment.

“But in terms of what he’s brought, what he’s given us over the years, he has been fantastic, a top-class player and top-class individual as well.”
