New Birmingham City loanee Kieran Dowell admits that he was 'completely sold' on leaving Rangers by ex-Celtic coach Chris Davies.

League One leaders Birmingham City have now confirmed the arrival of Kieran Dowell, who joins the Blues on loan from Rangers until the end of the season.

Rangers had told Dowell he was free to leave Ibrox after a disappointing 18 months in Glasgow during which the midfielder failed to make a big enough impact on the team.

The 27-year-old has been speaking about the move to Birmingham City and admits that now Blues manager Chris Davies played a key role in convincing him to move to St Andrews.

Chris Davies spent time as Brendan Rodgers assistant during the now Celtic manager's first stint at Parkhead.

The 39-year-old has already twice raided Rangers having signed Scott Wright on a permanent deal in the summer before striking a loan deal for Ben Davies.

It's a strategy that's worked for the Blues so far this season, with Birmingham top of League One and eyeing promotion to the English Championship.

Kieran Dowell admits he's 'buzzing to get going' and revealed that the switch to Birmingham is a 'good chance for me to come and play football'.

“I am buzzing to get going, it has happened really fast but I spoke to Craig Gardner and Chris Davies and they are both so ambitious," Dowell told BluesTV.

"The lads here are absolutely flying at the moment and there is a really positive feel about the place.

“It is a good chance for me to come and play football, come and play for a team who like to dominate the ball.

"I have always thrived playing in teams that like to control the ball, and speaking to the Manager I was completely sold with the way he wants to play.”

Does Kieran Dowell transfer have purchase option?

Kieran Dowell is the latest player to leave Rangers as the club slash their inflated wage bill with more expected to follow before next Monday's deadline.

Rabbi Matondo has been linked with Nantes after a transfer to Coventry City broke down whilst there is still come conjecture surrounding the future of Tom Lawrence.

According to Salary Sport, Dowell earns around £830k per year or £16k per week at Rangers meaning the Gers will save around £415k from the midfielder's short-term departure

Whilst Dowell will move to Birmingham until the summer, Sky Sports understands there is no purchase option in the deal meaning the midfielder is scheduled to return to Ibrox in six months.

Rangers have taken to social media to 'wish Kieran well for the rest of the campaign'.

Kieran Dowell signed a three-year deal with Rangers in the summer of 2023 and has gone on to make 32 appearances for the club, scoring twice.

Rangers have already sanctioned loan deals for Robbie Fraser (Livingston) and Cole McKinnon (Ayr United) this January.

Alex Lowry has also completed a permanent move to Wycombe Wanderers.
