Rangers made January 'approach' for 'phenomenal' winger as club mulls over £5.5m offer

Rangers seem to be struggling to attract wingers to the club this summer and have only been able to convince Oscar Cortes to stay.

Philippe Clement knows that he is lacking depth in the department and, if Abdallah Sima doesn't return, Scott Wright and Ross McCausland remain the only natural options for the right-hand side.

Yusuf Kabadayi has signed for Augsburg and moves for Adama Traore and Relebohile Mofokeng have both gone quiet as one up and coming wide man sees bids being made for his services after being linked with Rangers in January.

Ianis Hagi has played most of his best football on the right, but there are doubts about his future and it is unclear what the manager thinks of the Romania international.

He's also not a traditional winger, or a player who will hug the touchline.

Rangers given fee indication if they want to sign Luca Langoni

One player who is more suited is Luca Langoni, said to be the subject of interest from MLS sides New England Revolution and the Kansas City Wizards and a player who Rangers made an “approach” for.

Argentinian football website Olé has confirmed the rumour and has detailed what the offers have been so far.

The latest bid is said to be worth just under £5.5m for 70% of his contract.

This is a variation of a sell-on fee clause which means that Boca Juniors would get 30% of any future sale.

The 22-year old is still rated at Boca and has been playing regularly, however, the signing of Brian Aguirre could push him further down the pecking order.

Is Langoni fee too much of a risk?

When Rangers were linked in January, it seemed like a distant possibility.

A highly rated Argentina youth international, Langoni has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of Manchester City's Julian Alvarez by Horacio Pagani, a local pundit:

"Langoni is going to have a fate similar to that of Julián Álvarez. He is a phenomenal player because he plays with audacity. He has the personality to catch the ball and kick at the goal, he plays with a lot of determination."

The issue with Langoni isn't quality.

He's missed 42 games in the last two seasons with muscle injuries, specifically, hamstring muscle injuries.

As with Sima, if Rangers are spending £5m on a player, they have to be 100% certain that they are signing someone who is going to be available consistently.

Otherwise, Clement will end up with Wright and McCausland starting games again.

If he does, the same old problems will resurface.
