Rangers second Europa League fixture saw Philippe Clement face a familiar foe who won on their last trip to Glasgow and have become something of a bogey team.

The manager has a squad that is starting to look stronger as the Light Blues returned to Ibrox for the first time in Europe this season, hoping that the famous atmosphere would play its part.

Here are your Rangersplayer ratings for the game against Lyon where those that did well were let down badly by a few around them.

Rangers player ratings vs Lyon

Philippe Clement picked a consistent starting XI and this is how they rated:

Jack Butland – 6

Couldn’t do much about the goals that he conceded but conceding so many goals is never a good look for a goalkeeper.

Badly let down by some of the players tasked with protecting him.

Made a few solid stops as the game got stretched.

James Tavernier – 2

Given a torrid time for the 60 minutes that he was on the park.

Lost every one v one, didn’t get close enough to any of the attackers he was supposed to be marking and was culpable at two of Lyon’s goals.

Is this the beginning of the end for the skipper after Neraysho Kasanwirjo replaced him?

Jefte – 6

A mixed bag for the Brazilian.

Up against his toughest opponents to date, he at least made slightly more of an effort than Tavernier to stop the supply into the box.

One of Rangers most dangerous attacking outlets and covered more ground than any other player.

Robin Propper – 4

Good in possession but was guilty a few times of panic defending when full-backs got beat and stuck in no-man’s land.

Could have been closer to Alexandre Lacazette for the second and third Lyon goals but not to blame for the France international being in position to score in the first place.

Caught out a few times stepping out and not being quick enough to make a challenge.

John Souttar – 5

As with Propper, was confident in possession and most of the defending that he had to do was as a result of others not doing their jobs.

Exposed playing against such quick and clinical players when he was isolated.

Connor Barron – 6

Punished in the harshest possible way for his no-look pass into the middle of the pitch.

Worked tirelessly and stemmed the tide centrally alongside Mohamed Diomande with most of Lyon’s good work going down the flanks.

Mohamed Diomande – 8

Looks back to his best form and was Rangers best player alongside Nedim Bajrami, Rangers need more players like him.

Composed on the ball and determined to link play, Diomande also put himself about out of possession.

Tom Lawrence – 4

Other than opening the scoring, Lawrence was largely ineffective and couldn’t get involved in the game.

Nedim Bajrami – 9

Didn’t deserve to be on the losing side and caused problems almost every time that he got the ball playing off Rangers left-hand side.

Linked well with Jefte and there are the early signs of a promising partnership.

Chose the right decision ever time he got the ball and made bad passes look good with his exceptional first touch.

Should have more assists to his name but for his teammates who can’t finish.

Cyriel Dessers – 3

So poor from the Gers number nine.

Couldn’t hold the ball up, didn’t link play and spent more time rolling around on the ground and complaining to the referee than getting on with the game and trying to cause the defence problems.

Vaclav Cerny – 3

Gets three marks for his work rate but his effort with the ball was miles off what Rangers need off of a player with Cerny’s experience.

Substitutes

Nicolas Raskin – 6

Brought energy and a bit of spark to Rangers midfield as Philippe Clement looked to add fresh legs.

Ross McCausland – 5

Didn’t really have a chance to make an impression.

Dujon Sterling – 5

Utilised on the right-hand side of midfield, worked hard but couldn’t get much going with the ball.

Nerasyho Kasanwirjo – 7

Came on and showed the skipper up in terms of how to defend and stop his opposite number causing problems.
