Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers is one of six players being targeted by Ligue 1 club Saint Etienne as part of a French Revolution this winter.

But the Nigerian international hitman's Rangers exit will only be possible if the French club free up wages elsewhere in their squad this January.

Cyriel Dessers has dropped down the pecking order at Ibrox with the emergence of Hamza Igamane and the return of Danilo from injury.

Saint Etienne have been strongly linked with a move for Cyriel Dessers heading into the January window and now a report in France has provided an update on the situation.

Cyriel Dessers one of six Saint Etienne targets

Cyriel Dessers is believed to be a target for Saint Etienne this January but the French club will only be able to move for the Rangers striker if they can free up wages in their squad.

According to Foot 365, Dessers is one of six players being targeted by Saint Etienne as they look to avoid relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of the campaign.

With this January's transfer priority signing a new midfielder, Saint Etienne have their sights on Rennes midfielder Baptiste Santamaria on a loan-to-buy deal.

Saint Etienne are then considering paying up to €5m (£4.1m)for Montpellier midfielder Arnaud Nordin, whilst 'contact has been made' over Ajaccio defender Jesah Ayessa.

Interest in Cyriel Dessers has also not been 'forgotten' and an 'opportunity could arise if the Stéphanois free up some wages'.

Finally, Norwegian manager Erik Homeland could use his Scandinavian connections to sign Marius Broholm from Rosenborg, whilst Qatar-based left-back Matteo Dams is also on the Ligue 1 club's radar.

Rangers linked to Cyriel Dessers alternative

Rangers fans reckon Cyriel Dessers is one of five high-earning players who are quite simply not delivering enough in an Ibrox jersey.

Signed in a £4.5m deal from Cremonese in the summer of 2023, there have been some big moments for Cyriel Dessers but also some big misses.

A lack of reliability when it really matters sees Rangers fans at odds with the likeable big hitman, who has a positive attitude but is in the midst of a run of devastatingly poor form.

Rangers now have options in the forward line – something which could not be said for the first 18 months or so of Dessers' time in Glasgow – and fans are already looking beyond the striker.

South African striker Isaac Rayners has been linked to Rangers and could be viewed as a potential replacement should Saint Etienne move for Cyriel Dessers.
