There is still a bigger picture that Rangers need to concentrate on despite the doubts about whether or not Philippe Clement is the right man to take the club forwards.

Calls for the manager to be sacked from fans are understandable given the gap to Celtic, but also because of the apparent inability to formulate a successful game plan away from home with a squad that should be winning comfortably.

What was telling, was that when Rangers were desperate for a goal, Cyriel Dessers stayed on the bench with speculation suggesting that a return to Italy could be on the cards

Cyriel Dessers attracts interest as Rangers exit looms

Transfer supremo Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that Cagliari are interested in the much-maligned Rangers No.9, however, a new club has also entered the fray:

"Cagliari continues to move in this winter market in search of reinforcements for Davide Nicola," Di Marzio reported on his own website.

"The Sardinian club has identified the attack as the department where it needs to intervene and to do so it has set its sights on Cyril Dessers.

"Empoli are also interested in him."

How much could Rangers sell Dessers for?

Patrick Stewart has yet to talk to Rangers fans about the winter transfer plans but the priority is the same as the summer.

Moving players like Rabbi Matondo, Kieran Dowell and, in particular, Dessers who are all on big wages and contributing nothing, is key to being able to move the club forwards.

Dessers was 'close' to moving to Atlanta Utd before the last transfer window shut, Rangers had agreed a £4.6m deal only for the player’s personal demands to see it collapse

Given his status as third choice striker, Nils Koppen would do well to negotiate a similar sort of fee even if the Nigeria international has a respectable goals and assists record for the season.

As one of the club's biggest earners, he should be starting against teams like Dundee, but the ghosts of recruitment past continue to haunt a manager fighting for his job.
