Ruben Amorim reckons Rangers got away with one against Manchester United in the Europa League.

But the beaming former Braga boss refused to buy into narratives of revenge after his Old Trafford team eventually got what their manager views as just desserts against the Gers.

A late Bruno Fernandes goal broke Rangers hearts as Manchester United ran out 2-1 winners in the Europa League Battle of Britain.

But Ruben Amorim reckons that had the game been played in the Premier League, then United might've been put well on their way to Europa League victory in the first half.

Ruben Amorim reacts to disallowed goal

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was left fizzing after the Red Devils had a first-half opener ruled out for a foul on Rangers defender Robin Propper.

Lenny Yoro was adjudged to have pushed the Dutch defender in the box as Matthijs de Ligt nodded home from an Amad Diallo corner.

The moment threatened to have a sizeable outcome on the match, with a resolute Rangers giving Manchester United little before Jack Butland punched the ball into his own net.

Speaking about the incident come full-time, Amorim claims that if the match was being played in the Premier League then the Ibrox defender's soft fall would've been hammered by VAR.

"If it was in the Premier League it would be different, but we have to accept that," Amorim told the press at full-time.

"The best thing is we did it again in the set-piece in the second half.

"We are improving on set-pieces and we have an intense course in the Premier League with set-pieces and we can use it in Europe and you can do more in the Premier League, a little bit more, to score a goal.

"In that aspect it was a good performance.”

No Rangers 'revenge' for Manchester United manager

Ruben Amorim was also asked about exacting revenge on Rangers for that famous Ianis Hagi-inspired Europa League defeat to the Ibrox side whilst manager of Braga in 2020.

Rangers famously came back from 2-0 down to defeat Braga 3-2 at Ibrox with an Ianis Hagi double and stunning Joe Aribo goal flipping the game on its head.

Ruben Amorim was in the opposition dugout at Ibrox for that game but insists the thought never crossed his mind as Manchester United eked out a 2-1 victory.

"It was a long time, it was really strange in those two matches as we were winning 2-0 and then [Steven] Gerrard and his team changed some things," said Amorim.

"I was not thinking about that. It was a victory that we truly needed in this moment.”
