Rangers fans know better than most how painful financial mismanagement can be and the stress that it can cause.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle haven't had much sympathy because of their vote to demote the Ibrox outfit in 2012 but those of a Light Blue persuasion now have their eyes further afield.

Despite consistently competing in the Champions League, and the latter stages of European football, Lyon have found themselves provisionally relegated to Ligue 2 and hit with a transfer ban.

Lyon hit hard as Rangers fans indulge in wishful thinking

This is, unless they can pay off their £417m (€500m) debt by the end of the current season.

How does this affect Rangers you might ask?

Football fans being football fans are always an optimistic bunch and, despite the current season, Rangers fans are no different.

After a positive start against Lyon at Ibrox in which there were multiple chances to open the scoring, the French cracks proved how much more clinical quality players are and punished Philippe Clement's side in a 4-1 win.

With the news announced by Fabrizio Romano that Lyon are being hit hard, Rangers fans have taken part in some wishful thinking.

"Europa victories should be overturned and 3-0 victories given to opposition…" declared one optimistic Bear, "What a 3 0 win we had at Ibrox one of Dessers best games," dreamt another.

"We'll take the 3 points," demanded one not in the mood for messing about, with another stating that the "Ibrox result made void and The Teds awarded a 3-0 win. It's the only way to make it fair."

Could Rangers be awarded the three points?

In terms of how likely it is that Rangers could be awarded three points, it isn’t.

Lyon would have to stop playing or withdraw from the competition and, even then, given the new league phase format of the Europa League, it wouldn't be black and white.

If Rangers did get awarded the win though, it would all but guarantee knockout football given the current points tally of seven.

You never know…
