The three reported Rangers targets we're sure Clement wishes Gers had signed this summer

As the dust settled on Rangers' summer transfer window, it became abundantly clear that the club's well overdue squad overhaul was never going to be a one window job.

The Gers have seen 16 first-team players from last season's squad leave the club with only 11 coming into the first-team to replace them.

The jury remains out whether or not Rangers are in a better place now than they were when the final whistle blew in the Scottish Cup Final v Celtic last season.

But with Philippe Clement promised additional transfer funding in January, all attentions are on Rangers hobbling to the winter window with a number of injury problems persisting in the squad.

And as we reach the October international break, we reflect on three players in three problem positions that Rangers might've loved to have signed before the summer transfer window closed.

Jose Cordoba

Jose Cordoba was one of Rangers' biggest early targets in the transfer window.

The Panamanian defender, 23, had impressed in Bulgaria with Levski Sofia and was given the Ibrox treatment ahead of a potential summer move.

But when Norwich City stole in at the final moment, Cordoba left turned down Rangers for the English Championship.

The centre-back has since claimed this followed talks with his mum!

Rangers lost Ben Davies and Connor Goldson in the summer with Leon Balogun re-signing his contract and Robin Propper joining John Souttar at the heart of the defence.

Whilst Neraysho Kasanwirjo can play at centre-back, it's still an area Rangers feel short with a left-sided centre-back like Jose Cordoba still very much on the club's radar.

Joan Jordan

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been on the hunt for an experienced number six ever since John Lundstram's contract saga came to an end in the summer.

With the midfielder moving to Turkey, Rangers have relied on Connor Barron to fill the void with Mohamed Diomande his bonafide midfield partner.

Nicolas Raskin is returning from injury and Dujon Sterling has routinely deputised, but an experienced 'number six' type is likely to be top of the club's shopping list in January.

A lack of midfield structure is evident against higher quality opposition and Rangers need more control in the middle of the park in the club's biggest games.

Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan stands out as one of the biggest midfield targets of the window with Rangers strongly linked to a loan move.

There is some confusion as to why a move for the 30-year-old Spaniard fell apart but Jordan wound up at Deportivo Alavés whilst Rangers' midfield hunt goes on.

Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean was another reported option but the Scotland international was never likely to move to Ibrox.

Abdallah Sima

Rangers' pursuit of Abdallah Sima ended in heartbreak when the club crashed out of Champions League qualification.

And the Gers' scar tissue continues to be raked over ever since.

The Senegalese forward was desperate to re-sign for Rangers this season but Premier League Brighton wanted the attacker to test himself at a higher level.

Ligue 1 surprise package Stade de Brestois offered Sima an opportunity in the Champions League this season, something the 23-year-old has grabbed with both hands.

Scoring three goals in two games for Brest in the Champions League, Sima is on fire in France and Rangers' loss is Ligue 1's gain.

Rangers did not sign an alternative and left-wing is a real problem area between injuries, a lack of form and a lack of consistency.

Rabbi Matondo and Oscar Cortes are both out for the foreseeable and Rangers badly miss the goalscoring influence of Abdallah Sima at the top end of the pitch.
