'We will see' Philippe Clement on Rangers transfers and £9m Europa League bounty

Philippe Clement refused to be drawn on Rangers' transfer business despite raking in over £9m in bonuses in this season's Europa League.

Rangers are celebrating an impressive top-eight Europa League finish which guarantees the club safe passage to the competition's Round of 16.

Rangers will also be seeded for the tie, which means the club play at Ibrox in the second leg, with the Gers also avoiding a potentially tricky playoff clash.

Despite the monumental achievement – Rangers faced four of the top seven in eight matches in the revamped league phase – Philippe Clement refused to talk transfers.

Europa League impact on Rangers transfers

Rangers' qualification for the Europa League Round of 16 earns the club an additional £2m in bonuses.

Rangers earn £500k for finishing in the top-eight whilst participation in the Round of 16 is worth £1.5m.

The Gers' eighth place finish is also worth around £1.8m in prize money to the Ibrox club.

In total, Rangers have earned over £9m in prize money alone from this season's Europa League and Philippe Clement was asked if he might see some of this pumped into the squad.

With incoming CEO Patrick Stewart fronting questions on the January transfer window earlier in the month, Clement insists those are questions for the Rangers higher-ups.

"You don’t need to ask this question to me," Clement told reporters at full-time. "So that’s not about me.

"We talked about that a few weeks ago before the transfer market. My job is to work with the players who are here.

"So we will see the next couple of days what’s possible for the club."

Rangers coy on January transfer dealings

So far Rangers have only made one signing in the January transfer window, adding Portuguese defender Rafael Fernandes on loan from Ligue 1 club Lille.

Instead the window has focused on outgoings with Alex Lowry joining Wycombe Wanderers, Kieran Dowell joining Birmingham City and Rabbi Matondo moving to Hannover 96.

Youngsters such as Robbie Fraser (Livingston) and Cole McKinnon (Ayr United) have also left the club on loan.

As a result of these moves, Rangers have freed up wages from the club's stretched wage bill and have a few days left to complete any January business.

Rangers remain interested in a pre-contract deal for Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron but the club is coy on who else might be a target this January.

The likes of Welsh midfielder Tom Lawrence could also leave Ibrox before the window closes at 11pm on the evening of Monday 3rd February.
