Kieran Dowell hasn't exactly set the heather alight in a year and a half at Rangers.

The former Norwich City midfielder, 27, moved north in the summer of 2023 as Michael Beale set about reshaping the Rangers squad.

But over the course of the last 18 months, Dowell has always been unable to breakthrough from the fringes of the Rangers team and has found himself a target for frustrated supporters.

Having now been told he can leave Ibrox, Kieran Dowell is in discussions over a move to Birmingham City but there is still 'work to do' on the transfer this week.

Kieran Dowell in talks with Birmingham City

Four Lads Had a Dream have now confirmed that Kieran Dowell is in talks over a move to League One leaders Birmingham City.

The Rangers midfielder wasn't involved in the 3-1 victory over Dundee United and rumours had spread earlier in the day about a potential switch to St Andrews.

Four Lads have confirmed that the deal would see Dowell move to the Blues until the end of the season, with negotiations over a potential purchase option still on the table.

The leading Rangers blogger has also warned that there is still 'work to do' on the transfer with talks 'ongoing' as things stand.

Rangers thought they had offloaded Rabbi Matondo to Coventry City last week only for the transfer to break down over performance related bonuses.

Despite finding himself out of favour at Rangers, Kieran Dowell has made 16 appearances and three starts for the Gers this season.

In total the midfielder has made 32 appearances for the Ibrox club, scoring twice.

Rangers hope to cut wage bill in Ibrox reunion

Should Kieran Dowell complete the move to Birmingham City then he will join two former Rangers teammates at St Andrews.

Former Rangers winger Scott Wright completed a summer transfer to the Blues and has made nine League One appearances, scoring once.

High-earning Rangers defender Ben Davies is impressing on loan at Birmingham this season and has become an important fixture of the club's backline.

Former Everton star Kieran Dowell still has 18 months left on the contract he signed at Rangers last summer and earns a reported £16k per week and over £830k per year at Ibrox.

The Gers are determined to cut the club's inflated wage bill and would welcome the opportunity to shift Dowell's not inconsiderable salary.

Birmingham are managed by English coach Chris Davies, who was Brendan Rodgers' assistant during the Parkhead manager's first stint at Celtic.

The Blues are also backed by an ambitious billionaire US consortium which includes support from NFL legend Tom Brady.
