Napoli are eyeing a move for Southampton’s Yukinari Sugawara in the summer window.

That’s according to Calciomercato, and they cover the Serie A club’s interest and how he ended up at Southampton last summer.

The right-back spent four years at AZ Alkmaar before joining Southampton in July 2024.

Inter Milan showed keen interest before deciding not to proceed and this saw the Saints go ahead and complete the operation.

The Japan international has operated as a right-back and a right wing-back this season, making 28 appearances for Southampton. They are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table, 17 points behind 17th placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ivan Jurić’s side are likely to be relegated. Sugawara’s contract expires in 2028, but the report states Southampton ‘don’t have great hope of retaining’ him for next season.

Napoli could be an option as their sporting director, Giovanni Manna, is ‘pressing’ to sign the defender. The Naples club have ‘immediately activated’ the option of making him Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s deputy next season.

Calciomercato state a fee of €12m is needed to buy the fullback from Southampton in the next window.
