Manager 'seeks to distance himself' from Southampton vacancy drama – No serious worry building yet

Southampton are yet to appoint a new manager after parting ways with Russell Martin at the weekend.
The Premier League side have been linked to a few candidates including Santa Clara boss Vasco Matos. This was initially reported in the UK and these claims were relayed by the Portuguese press.
This includes Wednesday’s edition of Record, who then give their own take on the claims linking the 44-year-old to Southampton.
They say the manager ‘seeks to distance himself’ from the Southampton job and focus on his job at his current club.
Matos joined Santa Clara in July 2023 and helped them secure promotion to the top division. They have impressed under his orders this season and are currently a very impressive fourth in the table behind the giants of Sporting, FC Porto and Benfica.
His work at Santa Clara has perhaps caught Southampton’s attention, but there’s currently no worry around the Portuguese club or concern he could be going.
Southampton have only one win from 16 league games and are currently at the bottom of the table with five points.
Perhaps this opportunity has come too early.
