Southampton want to sign Palmeiras defender Vanderlan in the winter market to improve their defence.

That’s according to Bolavip in Brazil, who state the Premier League side ‘advance’ for the left-back’s transfer.

Southampton’s interest in the 22-year-old will please Palmeiras as they are looking to sell him in the upcoming window.

The Brazilian club have Joaquín Piquerez, Caio Paulista and Vanderlan as the left-backs in their squad. The former is sidelined with an injury and is an important player, and the club are clear that they will sell one of the latter two.

Southampton are keen on signing Vanderlan and the report says they could make a formal offer in the ‘coming days’. There’s no mention of the figures Ivan Juric’s side could offer or the South American club’s demand.

As well as the English club, Nottingham Forest and Benfica are also in the picture to sign Vanderlan.

Another report from Bolavip claims Palmeiras want to sell the fullback to Southampton in January.

The Saints have signalled to make an offer and Palmeiras want at least R$60m [€9.3m] to part ways with him.

Vanderlan graduated from Palmeiras’ academy and made his way into their first team in 2020. He made 35 appearances in all competitions for them this year.
