Manchester United’s 3-0 win at Southampton was especially painful for Saints star Ben Brereton Diaz who broke an unwanted Premier League record.

The Red Devils were back to winning ways on Saturday, though they struggled in the early phases of the match against St. Mary’s.

Andre Onana’s penalty save from Cameron Archer in the 33rd minute turned the game on its head, with Matthijs de Ligt and Marcus Rashford scoring just minutes later.

The three points were sealed late on when Jack Stephens was sent off for a foul on Alejandro Garnacho, with the forward going onto find the back of the net in injury time.

The result means Southampton have opened the season with four consecutive defeats while this was also the club’s 400th loss in the Premier League.

Unfortunately for Russell Martin’s side, they’ve achieved this milestone in record time, taking just 928 games to do so, surpassing West Ham who took 976 matches.

The other three clubs to have reached the 400 defeats milestone are Aston Villa (who took 1072 games), Newcastle (1090) and Everton (1128).

But for Brereton Diaz it has been an especially rotten day as he is now the player with the most Premier League appearances without a win in the competition.

This streak – 14 losses and four draws – started in January when the forward joined Sheffield United on loan from Villarreal and has continued following his permanent transfer to St. Mary’s over the summer.

18 winless games surpasses the record set by former striker Marvin Sordell who failed to win any of his 17 games for Bolton and Burnley between 2012 and 2015.

On a personal level, Brereton Diaz has a respectable six goals and an assist in 18 Premier League games, but he and his teammates must do better if they are to prevent the Saints from getting relegated.

The record for the longest wait for a first Premier League victory is currently held by former West Brom and Sheffield United winger Oliver Burke, who was finally on the winning side at the 26th attempt.

Brereton Diaz will be hoping not to get anywhere this record and will have the chance to taste victory in the competition for the first time next Saturday when Southampton host Ipswich Town.
