Stoke City have seen midfielder Wouter Burger cement himself as a standout player in Staffordshire since signing in the summer of 2023.

Stoke City had a busy summer of recruitment in 2023, and Dutch ace Wouter Burger was among the strongest players recruited in another hit-and-miss window at the Bet365 Stadium.

The 23-year-old arrived having impressed in Switzerland with FC Basel. He boasts some strong Eredivisie experience to his name too having learnt his way with Feyenoord before opting for pastures new.

Burger was a mainstay in his maiden campaign, chipping in with four goals and four assists in 41 games across all competitions for the Potters. He has retained a regular starting role this time around, featuring 16 times overall.

The level of his performances at a still-young age have seen him draw admiring glances from elsewhere. The £4m Stoke City star was the subject of links with Premier League side Spurs, a move that surely would have seen the Potters land a swift and healthy profit on their 2023 buy.

How much is Wouter Burger worth?

Those links with a move to Spurs came with a rumoured price tag of £12m. However, according to data, Burger is worth significantly less – in fact, he’s worth around what Stoke City paid for him last year.

According to FootballTransfers‘ data, Burger’s estimated transfer value is €4.7m, which translates to just below £4m. This valuation is lower than that of new star goalkeeper and Sweden international Viktor Johansson (€5.5m, or £4.6m.)

As a developing player who has now found success in two competitive leagues, one would assume Burger would move for significantly more than the true value data has estimated.

The 23-year-old has room to grow and improve but has already been tested at a high level, sampling European football with FC Basel, proving himself in the Championship and holding down a regular role in the Netherlands’ youth sides during his earlier career.

A long-term asset

As highlighted, Burger still has the best years of his career ahead of him, but what he has already done both before and since joining Stoke City makes him an asset for the present and future.

He signed a four-year deal upon arrival last summer too, keeping him onboard until 2027. It means there’s no pressure to cash in on a depreciating asset whatsoever.

While the data may not view Burger as a high-value player just yet, there’s no doubting how important he is to the Potters now. That will likely only grow as he develops, so the club can expect to make a good profit on him despite last summer’s investment.
