Norwich City are in talks to name Arsenal U18s boss Jack Wilshere as their new first-team coach, according to The Athletic.

Norwich City are on the lookout for a new addition to their backroom team after they lost Narcis Pelach earlier this season.

He was identified as the surprise replacement for Steven Schumacher at Stoke City after the Potters opted for a change in the dugout. Since then, the Canaries have been weighing up their options in the bid to bolster Johannes Hoff Thorup’s backroom team.

Now, it seems a strong contender for the post has emerged, and it’s certainly a familiar face.

According to The Athletic, Norwich City are in advanced talks with former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere over a move to Carrow Road. The 32-year-old retired in 2022 and has been working in the Gunners’ academy since.

He serves as their U18s boss currently but there is a growing confidence in Norfolk that Wilshere will make the move.

Wilshere may not be in position for this weekend’s game against Stoke City but he is excited by the chance to work with Thorup and has a relationship with Norwich City sporting director Ben Knapper, who previously worked as Arsenal’s loans manager.

Wilshere’s coaching pedigree

Wilshere might not have been in coaching long, but Norwich City could be making an exciting addition to their backroom team with a move for his services.

Often when talented players go through injury problems in their careers and retire early, they’re able to put some focus on a future in coaching. That has been the case for Wilshere, and it has helped him find success in the Arsenal youth setup.

He spent much of his career under the lead of legendary boss Arsene Wenger, who he is sure to have learned a lot from over the years. That could make him a really intriguing addition to the backroom of Thorup, who has impressed in his short time on these shores.

Looking forward

In an ideal world, Wilshere comes in as soon as possible and is in the dugout with Thorup and the rest of the Norwich City coaching staff for this weekend’s game against Stoke City.

However, with that unlikely to be the case, the focus will be on simply getting negotiations over the line and the 32-year-old through the door after a wait for Pelach’s replacement.

The former Canaries coach will pit his new side against Thorup and co this weekend in what is sure to be an intriguing tie.
