Stoke City passed up on chance to appoint 50-year-old last winter, reporter claims

Stoke City considered current England interim boss Lee Carsley before turning to Steven Schumacher last winter, according to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.
Stoke City have recently decided to make a managerial change once again and have now brought in former Huddersfield Town and Norwich City number two Narcis Pelach as their head coach. He lost 3-1 at home to Hull City in his first game at the helm last Friday.
Carsley, 50, emerged on the Potters’ radar in December last year after they made the decision to cut ties with Alex Neil. He has since been placed in caretaker charge of England after Gareth Southgate’s departure following Euro 2024.
As per reporter Nixon on Patreon, he caught the eye at the Bet365 Stadium after his impressive work with the Three Lions’ Under-21’s. However, he was ultimately overlooked and didn’t end up getting the job in the end.

Stoke City’s decision to appoint Schumacher from Plymouth Argyle turned out to be the right one in the end after he managed to keep them up.
He then won two of his first five fixtures in this campaign so eyebrows were raised when he was given the chop last week.
Carsley has won his first two games in charge of England and the FA will be weighing up whether to hand him the full-time job.
He said in August, as per the Three Lions’ website: “It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
The 50-year-old spent his playing days as a midfielder for the likes of Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, Coventry City, Everton and Birmingham City before hanging up his boots in 2011.
He has since delved into the coaching world and managed Brentford back in 2015.
Carsley has also held roles at Coventry City and Birmingham City before linking up with England in 2020.
What now?
Stoke City turned down the chance to bring him in last year and will now hope that their latest appointment in Pelach can be the right one.
The Potters have lacked stability over recent years and it doesn’t help that they chop and change their boss all the time.
They were poor in the second-half against Hull City and will need to bounce back from that disappointing defeat.
Next up is an away trip to Middlesbrough.
