Fan Letters: Is this pre-season the time for Embo to kick on at Sunderland?

RR reader Stuart thinks Sunderland fans could be overlooking the return of Elliot Embleton to form and fitness, now that he can have a fresh start. Got something to say? Email us: RokerReport@yahoo.co.uk

Dear Roker Report,

I wrote a couple of weeks ago pondering which would happen first – the country getting a new Prime Minister or SAFC getting a new manager.

Now we have both!

So say goodbye to the old failing administration; a new man has been appointed. A leader with a plan to correct the mistakes of his immediate predecessors. A clean slate on which to write a better future. I am filled with optimism and hope for the brighter times which lie ahead.

… and the election result wasn't bad either!

Sunderland vote counters beat all-comers (including local rivals) to be first to declare an election result.

Back of the net!

Dear Roker Report,

A leopard doesn't change its spots. Nothing will change as long as we have Speakman and co. Le Beale is another yes man. No experienced players will be signed and Sunderland will struggle. If I'm wrong, I'll apologise. If I'm right, it'll be "told you so."

Dear Roker Report,

Everyone seems to be focusing on Chris Rigg making an impact on the midfield next season and the addition of a holding midfielder. Nobody seems to mention the return to fitness of Elliot Embleton. Before his injuries, he was the man who took all the free kicks and corners and was the centre point of the midfield. If he can recapture his best form, it will be like signing a new player.

The addition of an experienced centre back would also release Luke O'Nien, which, I believe, could well sort out the midfield for next season.

Ed's Note [Gav]: Embo's big issue has been his fitness, but it feels like a tonne of time has passed since he was anywhere near our first team. But — he's fit now, he's got pre-season to impress the new coach, and we know he's got talented so let's see where we go from here. Nobody would be happier than me if he could somehow from this point really kick on and become a massive part of our push in the Championship.

Regarding O'Nien — every time someone sets him a challenge he manages to smash it out the park, so I think signing a high calibre central defender could really help push him even further. I don't see him as a midfield player and neither does he — even this week he's been interviewed talking about trying to be a better defender.

Exciting times ahead!
