Our charismatic striker's disallowed goal against Derby and memorable night at Burnley are today's discussion points! Got something to say? Email us: RokerReport@yahoo.co.uk

Dear Roker Report,

Further to the disgraceful refereeing decision to disallow Wilson Isidor's second goal is this comment from former Premier League referee Mark Halsey:

Paul Oliver

Ed's Note [Phil]: Hi, Paul. Thank you for your letter.

The decision not to award Wilson Isidor's goal on Tuesday night seems to have baffled everyone, and personally, I don't think we'll ever receive a proper explanation of what actually happened at Pride Park.

The refereeing standards in this league are dismally low, and as one of our readers recently pointed out, perhaps firm action needs to be taken in order to improve things, because these kinds of incidents are happening far too regularly nowadays.

Dear Roker Report,

At 8:00pm last Friday night, most Sunderland fans would've settled for a point in a tough fixture, and after the dust had settled, 0-0 wasn't the worst result in the world.

We had two penalties and hit the target with both but the first one, from start to finish, showed why the Championship needs VAR.

The offence was a yard outside the penalty area and that was clear to see, but once given, it's a clear red card for a goalscoring opportunity.

The goalkeeper taking his gloves off on the awarding of spot kick should be a yellow card, but the gamesmanship and time elapsed were clear mind games that worked. Personally, if I was waiting that long to take it, I would pass the ball to someone else and outfox the goalkeeper.

During the first penalty, the goalkeeper dived before the ball was struck.

By the rules, it's a clear retake, so the officials must be questioned. The second penalty was given after another debatable call, but why did the keeper suddenly get cramp?

Again, it was gamesmanship that clearly worked, but for me the goalkeeper should've been off before the second one was taken.

Hopefully our star man Wilson Isidor feels the love and bounces back at Derby, as he hit the target both times and the keeper saved them.

A lot is written about VAR but if it means getting correct calls, expand it to EFL.

Mark

Ed's Note [Phil]: Hi, Mark. Thank you for getting in touch.

I'm writing this reply in the aftermath of our gritty win at Derby, a game during which Wilson Isidor definitely responded strongly to what happened at Burnley and was only denied a goal as a result of more incompetent officiating, so I think he answered plenty of questions at Pride Park.

Looking back, I just feel that the two missed penalties against Burnley were a 'once every ten seasons'-type of thing, and I'd also have no problem with Isidor taking penalties again this season.

He's clearly a resilient player and the next time he lines one up from twelve yards, he'll hopefully bury it!
