Dear Roker Report,

I haven't posted for a while as it all seemed so negative.

Anyway, we have a new manager, and we've dodged two bullets with Will Still and Callum Styles. We've got a manager who wants to play attacking football with young players.

All sounds good to me.

So, let's look forward to the new season. Just to reiterate, I have watched Sunderland since 1967 and all of these thoughts are mine and mine alone.

Ed's Note [Gav]: I guess time will tell if we dodged a bullet with Still, but I'm inclined to side with you... his social media behaviour was just odd and we learned the hard way with Beale what happens when you appoint someone who is obsessed with social media and stuff starts going wrong. But yes — let's look forward and not back!

Thanks for the temporary relief. With a new head coach who works well with young footballers, we seem on the right track as we have a decent young squad just waiting to spread their wings.

Hopefully, keeping Clarke and signing a decent centre forward should see us on an upward trend. I meet my brother-in-law before every season starts for a chinwag about the team. I was not looking forward to that meeting a week ago, but now, bring him on.

Ed's Note [Gav]: I'm sure everyone at the club wants what is best for Sunderland - and that means keeping our best players here, improving the current squad and kicking on. The start to this summer has been largely positive and it feels like we're gaining some good momentum, and the best way to continue that is to back ourselves in the transfer market and have a good pre-season. So far, so good though.
