Sunderland were handed their first defeat under Graeme Murty against Boston United in their opening Group C fixture of the National League cup.
Dan Mooney scored the only goal of the game putting an end to Sunderland’s unbeaten streak in all competitions.
Adil Aouchiche and Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi featured in a strong starting lineup for Sunderland at the Jakemans Community Stadium.
Sunderland took a fierce approach to the start of the game resulting in bookings for both Joe Anderson and Ben Crompton in the opening quarter of the game with their best chance falling to Ogunsuyi who fired just wide of the post.
The Pilgrims started to grow into the game and were almost rewarded for their patience as Frankie Maguire’s thunderous effort crashed off the bar.
Mooney looked to be the hosts best outlet throughout the half and the Pilgrims found their way through a resolute Sunderland defence as Mooney’s strike was deflected in off Anderson right at the end of the first half.
Boston pushed to extend their lead in the second half as Kelechi Chibueze was forced into making two smart saves to keep the Black Cats hopes alive in the game.
Sunderland looked capable of punishing Boston for their missed chances however their best opportunity of the game fell to Zak Johnson in the 80th minute who could only direct his shot to the outside of the post meaning the three points were staying in Boston.
“I think they were intimidated by playing against a mans team” Murty told Safc.com after the game, he also stated that the experience his players are learning at this stage of their career is “invaluable” and will only help their development as players.
Sunderland have a chance to bounce back in Group C of the National League Cup as they travel to Tamworth on Tuesday 19th November where they will look to pick up their first win in the competition.
