Sunderland are making an effort to sign Chuba Akpom from Ajax before the end of the transfer window.

That's according to Foot Mercato, who report that the 29-year-old striker could be set for a return tot eh Championship.

They report that the Ajax striker 'could sail towards new horizons' during the end of the transfer window. Lille and Lens have shown an interest in France, but Sunderland are 'another courtier'.

They're very much in the race for the striker and according to FM's information, they are pushing to buy the striker this month.

The website makes no mention of the offer Sunderland are offering or whether Ajax will be open to a sale, just that the Black Cats are very much in the mix at this moment in time.

Akpom has again been in and out of the picture at Ajax this season, making 30 appearances in all competitions but only making nine starts in the Eredivisie.

That's often been the case for him in the Netherlands and now it seems Sunderland want to test Ajax's resolve to keep him before the end of the transfer window.

It's a situation to keep an eye on but it appears the Championship side are not ready to stop what has already been an ambitious January transfer window.
