Sunderland look set to miss out on the signing of Chuba Akpom from Ajax as he's edging closer to joining Lille.
That's according to Foot Mercato, who report that the striker is set to be a new addition for the French side and turn down Sunderland in the process.
A report earlier today stated that Akpom had to choose his future in the coming days as several sides looked to sign him on loan before the window closes.
Sunderland were one of the sides showing an interest as they continue to work to improve their squad while they can and push for promotion to the Premier League.
That had led them to Akpom, but it seems they are set to miss out as the Ajax striker is closing in on a move to Lille instead.
According to FM's information, the French side are working hard to obtain an agreement for the striker and have moved ahead of the competition for him and into 'pole position'.
Akpom is a long-term target for the club and now could be their best opportunity to finally get him, so they are pushing hard to make it happen.
That's bad news for Sunderland, who appear to be set to miss out unless they can find a way to get back ahead of their French counterparts.
