Sunderland 1-0 Millwall
Trai Hume’s 20th minute volley was enough to send Sunderland back to winning ways with at the Stadium of Light.
Lukas Jensen followed Michael Cooper and James Trafford in denying Sunderland from 12 yards, as Luke O'Nien's second half penalty was saved.
Regis Le Bris made two changes to the side that suffered defeat to Coventry two weeks ago. Alan Browne and Wilson Isidor replaced Eliezer Mayenda and the injured Dennis Cirkin.
Hume started despite being sent home from Northern Ireland this week. The match winner moved to left back with Browne filling in at right back.
Sunderland started the game brightly with a neat move between Isidor and Chris Rigg with the Frenchman denied by the legs of Jensen. Jobe followed up, but his effort was blocked by Casper De Norre.
The Black Cats opened the scoring via a clever short corner between Patrick Roberts and Romaine Mundle. Roberts' eventual cross landed at the feet of Hume with the full back making no mistake to fire Le Bris' side in front.
Sunderland were close to extending their lead early into the second half. Rigg found Isidor with a teasing cross, the striker saw his close range header tipped over by Jensen.
The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute after Mundle was brought down by Japhet Tanganga.
The Black Cats extended their poor penalty record to only one goal in five spot-kicks this season, as their woes continued as Jenson denied O'Nien’s tame effort.
Sunderland remain fourth in the championship. Le Bris’ side sit on 72 points, 15 points clear of Bristol City in seventh and nine points behind Leeds in second.
Sunderland are next in action on Saturday 5th April against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in a 12:30pm kick off.
