Premier League cult hero with iconic goal celebration announces retirement aged 39

Former Swansea City striker and Premier League cult hero Bafetimbi Gomis has announced his retirement from football aged 39.
Gomis spent just two seasons in England’s top-flight but made a lasting impact thanks to his unforgettable goal celebration.
The former France international began his career at Saint Etienne in 2003 before moving to rivals Lyon where he established himself as a top goalscorer in Ligue 1.
He moved to Swansea on a free transfer in 2014 but could not replicate his success at the Welsh club, finding the back of the net 17 times in 71 appearances across all competitions.
Yet his legacy at the Liberty Stadium is well-established thanks to his iconic ‘Black Panther’ celebration which saw him crawl towards supporters, imitating a big cat stalking and clawing it’s prey.
Gomis notably unleashed the panther celebration after scoring the winning goals in stunning victories against Manchester United and Arsenal.
The Swans allowed him to leave in 2016 and he would go onto have prolific spells with Marseille, Galatasaray and Al-Hilal.
He also scored three times in 12 caps for France and was included in their squad for Euro 2008.
Gomis wound down his career at Kawasaki Frontale, departing the Japanese club in September.
On Sunday, he revealed he was hanging up his boots for good while working as a TV pundit for the Ligue 1 match between former sides Saint-Etienne and Lyon.
His past teammates and clubs have paid tribute to the ex-striker, including Swansea who posted on social media: ‘Wishing Bafetimbi Gomis all the best for his retirement.
‘Once a Jack, Always a Jack.’
In all, Gomis scored 358 goals in 790 appearances across a 21-year career, with his trophy haul including two Turkish Super Lig titles and two Saudi Pro League titles.
