Tottenham's injury troubles have impacted their goalkeeping department, with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario sidelined for significant period after undergoing ankle surgery.

The Italian international suffered the injury in late November during a match against Manchester City and is not expected to return until several weeks. Spurs have turned to veteran Fraser Forster in his absence to fill the void.

However, Forster's performances, particularly in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United, have come under criticism  due to costly errors, raising concerns about the club's goalkeeping depth.

While some reports have suggested that the club would sign another goalkeeper in January, with the likes of Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor and Wolves' Sam Johnstone linked with a move, Alasdair Gold's latest report has been contradictory.

As per him, Tottenham are not expected to make a move for the Wolves man in the January transfer window.

Alasdair Gold confirms Tottenham looked at Sam Johnstone

According to him, while Johnstone's name was considered among potential targets, the club is unlikely to take their interest further.

Gold stated on X:

"Update on this. Johnstone was seemingly one of the keepers Spurs had considered again, as they did back before they signed Forster, but it's not going any further than that."

The 31-year-old finds himself in a challenging situation at Wolves, having been dropped by new manager Vitor Pereira in favour of José Sá. This decision has reportedly fueled speculation about Johnstone's availability this month.

Since joining Wolves from Crystal Palace in August 2024 for a reported fee of £10 million, Johnstone has featured in seven Premier League matches, conceding 17 goals. Wolves' struggles near the relegation zone have also added to the goalkeeper's inconsistent form.

Johnstone, a product of Manchester United's academy, brings considerable experience, having represented clubs such as Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace. However, his performances this season have not been enough to secure his position as Wolves' first-choice goalkeeper.

For Tottenham, the priority remains addressing their immediate goalkeeping needs. The club must decide whether Forster can reliably cover until Vicario's return or if a new signing is necessary.

While a move for Johnstone seems off the table, Spurs may look at alternative options to reinforce their squad as the January window progresses.
