Tottenham Hotspur vice-captain Cristian Romero has become the subject of growing transfer speculation, with reports indicating that the Argentine defender is contemplating a move away from North London.
Although Romero remains under contract with Spurs until 2027, recent developments suggest he is assessing his options, with Atlético Madrid emerging as a serious contender for his signature.
Tottenham star Cristian Romero wants move to Atletico Madrid
According to Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the 26-year-old has recently held discussions with Atlético Madrid's manager, Diego Simeone, regarding a potential transfer.
Simeone is believed to be a strong admirer of his compatriot and has prioritised Romero as a key defensive target.
While negotiations between the two clubs have yet to advance, Romero has reportedly given his approval to the idea of a move, and personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block should a deal be agreed upon.
It further adds that 'discussions have already taken place' between the player's agent and the Madrid club, with Spurs' asking price to only obstacle to the move.
Despite Romero's interest in a move to Spain, the North London club are determined to hold onto their star defender.
Chairman Daniel Levy views him as an integral piece of the club's future, though reports suggest that an offer in the region of €80 million could potentially persuade Tottenham to reconsider their stance, while another report states that the club are seeking a fee over £100m.
Romero's uncertain future has been compounded by frustrations over his rehabilitation process following a hamstring injury that sidelined him for nearly three months.
The defender expressed disappointment with Tottenham's medical team, instead crediting Argentina's national team physios for aiding his recovery, fueling speculation about a strained relationship with the club's staff.
Cristian Romero's time at Tottenham and recent turbulences
Since arriving at Tottenham in 2021, initially on loan from Atalanta, Romero has cemented himself as a crucial part of the squad. His move was made permanent the following year, and his aggressive defensive approach, coupled with his leadership qualities, earned him the vice-captaincy ahead of last season.
However, recent developments has indicated that the player may not be extremely happy with the club's current situation. The club are currently sitting 14th in the table, and are out of all domestic competitions. The Europa League remains the only chance for them to salvage their season but it is unlikely that they will go all the way in the competition.
