Jan Vertonghen has been tipped to return to Tottenham in a behind the scenes role after the defender announced his retirement.

The Belgian centre-back, who spent eight successful seasons at Spurs before leaving in 2020, is expected to retire at the end of his contract with Anderlecht this summer.

As he prepares for life after playing, a move into coaching or a backroom position at Tottenham could be on the cards.

Bryan King tips Jan Vertonghen to return to Tottenham

Former Spurs scout Bryan King has hinted that Vertonghen's vast experience and deep understanding of the game would make him a valuable asset to the club.

The pundit believes the Belgian's next steps could depend on Ange Postecoglou's long-term plans, but bringing back a figure of his stature would undoubtedly benefit Tottenham.

Speaking to Tottenham News, King said:

"I think it will depend on whether Postecoglou remains or a new manager comes in.

"However, Vertonghen would certainly be an asset, because of his knowledge and playing career. I'd imagine that he has been doing his coaching badges because he seemed the type of person who would like to continue in football after his playing career was over.

"It wouldn't be a bad idea to bring somebody like that back to the football club, that is for sure. Knowledge is a great thing, and Vertonghen has got plenty of it.

"I think it would be a feel-good move too, Vertonghen had a very good career at Tottenham."

Vertonghen's time at Spurs

During his time in North London, Vertonghen was a key part of the club's defensive setup and one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League. His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and leadership qualities made him an integral part of Mauricio Pochettino's squad.

Having arrived from Ajax in 2012, he quickly became a fan favourite and formed a formidable centre-back partnership with compatriot Toby Alderweireld.

His contributions played a crucial role in Spurs' journey to the 2019 Champions League final, cementing his legacy at the club.

Over his eight-year tenure, Vertonghen made 315 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists. His ability to adapt to different defensive roles, including as a left-back when required, further highlighted his importance to the team.

Given his knowledge of the club and vast experience at the highest level, a move back to Spurs could be a fitting next chapter in Vertonghen's career.
