How much Tottenham will earn from rare overseas North London Derby

A football finance expert has shed light on how much Tottenham are expected to earn from their overseas North London derby in Asia this summer and has explained why the Lilywhites are not in a strong position to compete with some of their Premier League rivals in this summer’s window.
Last month, Tottenham confirmed that they will be playing Arsenal in Hong Kong this summer in a pre-season friendly, which will be the first North London derby played outside UK soil.
The fixture, which is scheduled for Thursday, 31 July 2025, will be part of Spurs’ preparations for the 2025-26 season, with the game set to be played at the 50,000-seater Kai Tak Stadium.
There is no doubt that the decision has been informed by commercial considerations, especially given that Tottenham have posted a loss for the fourth financial year in a row.
How much are Tottenham expected to earn from pre-season NLD?
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson has now discussed the plans of the two North London clubs to play a fixture in Hongkong, suggesting that ticket prices will likely be very high.
Borson believes that the two clubs can earn around £2m each from playing that one fixture, including matchday receipts and sponsorship.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t know what the ticket prices are proposed to be, but you would think they're going to be quite expensive. Ultimately, what's that game worth? That game is worth whatever it's generating in terms of matchday and whatever it can generate in sponsorship, which is probably not much.
“You wouldn't imagine it's going be worth much more than $6million (£4.7million) maybe. You are getting a proportion of that. It might be worth £2million each. It's not going to move the dial massively, but the whole pre-season tour will be worth more.”
Stefan Borson explains why Spurs may struggle to compete with rivals
Borson pointed out that both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are going to be at a huge disadvantage compared to two of their Premier League rivals heading into the summer.
He explained that Man City and Chelsea will both be able to add much more to their coffers as a result of their participation in the Club World Cup.
He added: “It doesn't even come close to what Chelsea and City are going to get from the Club World Cup. There is another illustration of the problem.
“If you have the situation this summer where six teams are in next season's Champions League, and Tottenham aren't one of them, and then on top of that maybe two of those teams are also getting Club World Cup money, it's just going to be almost impossible for Spurs to compete next season on this sort of wage bill without the sort of investment that we're thinking about.”
