AC Milan defender Emerson Royal has heaped praise on new manager Sérgio Conceição for giving him attacking freedom, much the same as what he had at Tottenham.

The full-back has been speaking to AC Milan's official media channels about his new manager, who arrived at the end of the December.

The Portuguese coach was brought in to replace Paulo Fonseca, who had been hired in the summer but proved to be the wrong man for the job.

Royal, likewise, arrived in the summer in a €15m deal from Tottenham. He had spent three years with Tottenham before that after arriving for €25m from Barcelona.

He never managed to fully impress with Spurs, his defensive weaknesses often being found despite his obvious strengths going forwards.

It's been a similar story at AC Milan so far, where he's faced plenty of criticism for his performances. Indeed, plenty have labelled him something of a disastrous signing.

So far, he's been a regular under Sérgio Conceição since he was appointed and it seems the 26-year-old is happy with life under him so far.

"With Sérgio Conceição, I have played a little more offensively. From the first day he told me I could do it," he said.

"Emerson, it’s no brakes. You can attack, I don't see any problem with that. My whole career has been like that. Whether it was with the national team or at Tottenham, I always liked playing further forward. With this coach, I have a little more freedom."
