Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly fast-tracking their efforts to sign Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, as they look to bolster their squad in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old Englishman, a product of Manchester United's academy, has been on Spurs' radar for some time, with earlier reports suggesting the club intended to secure a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer in the summer.

However, new reports from GiveMeSport indicate that Tottenham are now exploring the possibility of signing Gomes this month.

The report states that Tottenham are keeping a close eye on Gomes' situation at Lille and are aware of growing interest from rival clubs. To avoid losing out, Spurs are prepared to test Lille's resolve with an immediate approach 'in the coming weeks'.

The North London club are said to be eager to determine whether a January deal is feasible, and chairman Daniel Levy could make an enquiry soon to bring the player to the Premier League earlier than anticipated.

Gomes joined Manchester United's academy at the age of six and made history in 2017 when he became the first Premier League player born in the 2000s. Despite making 10 senior appearances for United, he struggled to secure a regular spot in the first team and moved to Lille in 2020.

Since joining the French club, Gomes has flourished under manager Paulo Fonseca, developing into a dependable playmaker in central midfield. His creativity and composure on the ball have earned him plaudits, and he has become a key player for Lille.

His strong performances last season cemented his reputation as a rising star, drawing attention from clubs across Europe.

With just over 160 senior appearances across Lille, Boavista FC, and Manchester United, the young midfielder has made 40 goal contributions (15 goals and 25 assists).

Tottenham's busy transfer window

Tottenham have already been active in the January transfer market, completing the £12.5 million signing of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague. The club is also linked with PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani, with reports suggesting that Daniel Levy has personally flown out to negotiate a deal for the Frenchman.

Securing Gomes would add versatility and creativity to Ange Postecoglou's midfield, aligning with the manager's attacking philosophy.

As negotiations unfold, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham can strike a deal with Lille to bring Gomes to North London this month. However, their intent to move quickly suggests they are determined to secure the talented midfielder before rivals can make their move.
