Tottenham Hotspur may soon face a crucial decision about the future of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, as the rise of Lucas Bergvall offers new possibilities for reshaping their midfield.

Club insider and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has hinted that Spurs might consider selling Bentancur this summer, citing Bergvall's unexpected progress as a reason for a potential strategic shift.

Despite a challenging campaign that has seen Spurs drop to 15th in the Premier League with just one point from their last seven games, Bergvall has been a rare bright spot. The Swedish teenager, signed last summer for a reported £8.5 million, has exceeded expectations in his debut season.

Bergvall has made 27 appearances across all competitions, delivering crucial moments, including a match-winning goal against Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. His ability to thrive under pressure and handle the demands of senior football has not gone unnoticed.

John Wenham on Rodrigo Bentancur's future at Tottenham

Wenham praised the young midfielder's progress, highlighting his importance to the team, particularly during Bentancur's absences.  Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said:

"Bergvall has exceeded all my expectations.

"I thought a few months ago that he might leave on loan in January. However, that is so far away from my thoughts now that it is ridiculous.

"While the injuries have been frustrating, it has allowed Bergvall to play in these big matches, and that experience he has banked will make him stronger moving forward. Therefore, we now have options in the middle of the park.

"Suddenly, we could be looking at the likes of Bentancur – who is out of contract in 2026 – and thinking about selling him in the summer because of the emergence of a player like Bergvall. I like Bentancur, but the constant injuries and suspensions have been difficult.

"As a result, he is somebody who we might look to move on as we think about long-term planning."

Bentancur, 26, has faced a turbulent season marred by injuries and disciplinary issues. The Uruguayan midfielder, who has contributed two goals and an assist in 22 appearances this term, recently served a seven-game suspension and also suffered a concussion.

However, despite his frequent absences, he remains a key part of Ange Postecoglou's side who recently labelled him as an "important" player for his team.

With just 18 months left on his contract, Tottenham may view the upcoming transfer window as an opportunity to cash in on the experienced midfielder. While Bentancur remains a valuable asset, his persistent setbacks have raised questions about his long-term reliability.

Meanwhie, Bergvall's emergence as a viable midfield option offers Spurs flexibility moving forward. His composure, adaptability, and readiness to perform at the Premier League level suggest that he could play a central role in Tottenham's long-term plans under Ange Postecoglou.

As Wenham noted, the game time and experience Bergvall has gained during this challenging period will only strengthen his development, potentially reducing the need for a player like Bentancur.

As Spurs look toward rebuilding and future success, Bentancur's potential departure could be influenced by Bergvall's rapid development.
