Tottenham Hotspur's poor start to the 2024/25 Premier League season continued with a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Ipswich Town on Sunday.

Had they won, the Lilywhites would have jumped all the way to third in the table, just behind reigning champions Manchester City and leaders Liverpool.

But as it happens, Spurs are now languishing in 10th and are only inside the top half thanks to their superior goal difference over Brentford.

Spurs struggled to settle and both sides traded early chances before the hosts finally found some rhythm. However, it was Ipswich who earned a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap.

Tottenham came out fast in the second half and after a Dominic Solanke goal was ruled out for offside, they halved the deficit through a powerful Rodrigo Bentancur header on 69 minutes.

Spurs continued to push but Ipswich — who remained a threat on the break — managed to hold out for their first Premier League win since beating Middlesbrough 1-0 way back in April 2002.

Sunday's result was met with boos from the Spurs supporters and Ange Postecoglou will no doubt be feeling the pressure.

Guglielmo Vicario – 5/10 – Will be disappointed in his work on Delap's goal, even if Szmodics' cross was powerful from close range. Couldn't do anything about the first goal.

Pedro Porro – 5/10 – Took a while to get going in attack, failing with his first three attempted dribbles. However, his fourth helped him earn a corner, which he delivered right onto the head of Bentancur for a goal. Caught out of position and couldn't recover to stop the cross on Ipswich's second after being slow to react to a loose ball on the first.

Cristian Romero – 6/10 – His misdirected header played a role in Ipswich's opener but he was otherwise OK.

Radu Dragusin – 3/10 – Credited with an error on Ipswich's second goal, although it came at him very quickly. Even so, he still doesn't look confident at the heart of Tottenham's defence.

Destiny Udogie – 6/10 – Struggled defensively against Omari Hutchinson, but did well going forward.

Pape Sarr – 7/10 – One of Tottenham's better players until he was forced off just after the hour due to injury. Completed all four of his long passes and won nine of 13 combined ground and aerial duels.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 8/10 – Was probably Tottenham's best player even before he scored, but his bullet header to halve the deficit sealed it. Registered seven tackles, six recoveries and three interceptions while winning 12 of his 18 combined ground and aerial duels.

Brennan Johnson – 4/10 – Fluffed a few good chances and failed to really test Leif Davis with his speed.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7/10 – Always busy, trying to make things happen for Spurs. Created three chances and attempted eight crosses.

Son Heung-min – 7/10 – Caused plenty of trouble with his directness and dribbling but just couldn't find his mark when it came to finishing things off.

Dominic Solanke – 5/10 – Denied a goal due to handball. Provided a good focal point with his hard work and physicality, but needed more service and support. Missed a big chance in second-half stoppage time.

Substitutes:

Timo Werner (66′, for Sarr) – 7/10 – Missed a good chance inside the box but improved Spurs overall.

Yves Bissouma (84′, for Bentancur) – 5/10 – Brought on far too late to have an effect.

James Maddison (84′, for Johnson) – 5/10 – As above. Should have been brought on even earlier given his creative influence.
