Tottenham Hotspur are likely to sign the Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso during the January transfer window.

According to a report from Football Insider, they are likely to get the deal done because of the increased interest in the player. Tottenham have secured a first refusal on the player for a fee of just £21 million. They will be able to secure his signature for the amount in January.

Tottenham secured the agreement with the Spanish club when they sold Giovani Lo Celso to them in the summer.

The 23-year-old is reportedly a target for Aston Villa as well. Tottenham will not want to lose out to their top four rivals, and it will be interesting to see if they can get the deal across the line.

The American international has shown his quality in La Liga and he is a key player for Real Betis. He has the physical and technical attributes to do well for Tottenham as well.

The reported asking price seems quite reasonable for the 17-cap American international. He has the ability to justify the investment in the coming seasons. Cardoso could prove to be a bargain at that price.

Meanwhile, a report from Estadio Deportivo claims that the interest from other clubs has forced Tottenham's hand, and they are now 'considering' a January move for the player. With multiple reports stating the same, it seems that a move for Cardoso is only a matter of time.

The 23-year-old will look to hit the ground running in English football and it remains to be seen whether he can establish himself as a player for the North London club.

The player is still quite young and he is likely to improve with coaching and experience. Regular football in England could accelerate his development and help him fulfil his potential.
