Tottenham are exploring a summer move for Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic, with a £25m deal being discussed, as the club looks to rebuild after a disastrous campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur's dramatic fall from grace this season has left many concerned about the direction things are heading at the club.

The slump has been so severe that it's sparked talk of Ange Postecoglou being sacked – even if he somehow manages to lift the Europa League trophy come May.

Right now, Tottenham sit 16th in the Premier League table and have lost 18 of their 33 games. That's not just a bad run – it's a complete collapse.

Things clearly aren't right in N17, and fixing the mess will take more than just a managerial change. A full squad overhaul feels inevitable at this point, and Spurs are already being linked with potential exits and arrivals.

Tottenham want Manchester City’s Mateo Kovacic

Tottenham need to bring in quality if they want to return to being a top-six side in performance, not just in name. A few key signings are expected, and in midfield, there could be a major shake-up.

Yves Bissouma has had a rocky season, and talk of him moving on in the summer wouldn't surprise anyone. If he does go, then naturally, Spurs will have to dip into the market for a replacement.

According to journalist Steve Kay on KS1 TV, Tottenham are said to have set their sights on Mateo Kovacic.

The Croatian, who only joined Manchester City two summers ago, is said to be on Spurs' radar, though it's more of a case of interest from Tottenham than any willingness from City to part ways with the £25m-rated midfielder.

The journalist said: "They are big wages at City, Walker is gone, Kovacic, I've been hearing Spurs are looking at Kovacic, so they're going to be revamping their midfield. That's more Spurs enquiring than City wanting to let him go, but we will have to see what happens with that”.

Mateo Kovacic's winning mentality could be key for Spurs

While Kovacic doesn't quite fit the youthful profile Tottenham have leaned towards in recent years, he brings something that's sorely lacking – experience and a winning mentality.

Throughout his career, Kovacic has lifted major trophies with clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City. He knows what it takes to win at the top level – something Tottenham haven't managed to crack.

There's also the possibility that Cristian Romero could leave Spurs this summer, which would be another experienced figure out the door.

Bringing in someone like Kovacic could be vital in balancing the squad and reinforcing the mentality needed to get back to competing.
