Tottenham Hotspur's troubled season has been further compounded by the prolonged absence of vice-captain and defensive stalwart Cristian Romero, who has been sidelined since December with a muscle injury.

The Argentine has now missed 13 consecutive matches, bringing his total absences this season to 18—a significant blow to Spurs' already fragile campaign.

Romero's absence has left a glaring void in Tottenham's defence, contributing to their struggles in the Premier League. With the team languishing in 15th place after 23 games, the likelihood of finishing outside the European qualification spots looms large.

Chris Waddle on Cristian Romero

Former Spurs midfielder Chris Waddle has stirred debate by questioning Romero's long-term commitment to the club.

Waddle suggested that the Argentine's body language indicates he may no longer wish to remain in North London and could be eyeing a move to elite clubs like Real Madrid or Barcelona.

He also proposed that if Romero is inclined to leave, it might be wise for Tottenham to cash in and reinvest in a player fully dedicated to the team's ambitions.

Speaking to AceOdds via Teamtalk, Waddle said:

"Romero is a good, old-fashioned centre-half who's not afraid to leave his foot in. He'll hit you if he has to hit you. He's not afraid of a yellow card or a red.

"His body language after last season suggests he doesn't really want to be at the club anymore. I think he believes he should be at Real Madrid or Barcelona. If he wants to go, it's better for Tottenham to cash in and buy someone who wants to play for the club."

Romero initially joined Spurs on loan from Atalanta in August 2021 before completing a permanent move the following year. Since his arrival, he has been instrumental in solidifying Tottenham's backline, earning praise from fans and management alike.

The 26-year-old's season had started on a high note, including a goal in a commanding 4–0 win over Everton in August. However, recurring injuries have derailed his campaign.

Real Madrid showed interest in signing him back in the summer but Levy slapped a massive price tag on him which put them off at that time.

But the Spanish giants remain interested in signing him, and it has been reported that if they step up their pursuit, Romero could push for a big-money move to La Liga.

Romero's influence at Tottenham cannot be overstated. As vice-captain and a key figure in the defence, he has been vital to the club's structure. However, with Spurs languishing in 15th place after 23 games and facing the likelihood of finishing outside European qualification spots, retaining the 26-year-old defender may prove difficult.
