Tottenham have made a significant U-turn regarding extension of Heung-min Son's current contract.
According to the latest report from GiveMeSport, the club are on course to trigger a 12-month extension on his current contract instead of offering the Spurs captain a new deal.
The club also seriously considered rewarding the South Korean with a new long-term contract, however, the Tottenham hierarchy have now had a change of heart, and are choosing to remain cautious instead of putting further strain on the wage bill.
It is also suggested that the player's recent injury issues have also played a role in the change of decision behind-the-scenes, further convincing the decision makers to not enter into talks for a long-term contract at this stage.
Extending Son's contract for another year will be seen as a strategic move by the club. This decision would not only secure the immediate future of their star player but also ensure the club retains his transfer value, should they explore a potential sale down the line.
Heung-min Son: Recent injury struggles
Heung-min Son first picked up a hamstring injury during their Europa League clash against Qarabag FC, which saw him miss almost one month of action.
He made a scoring return from injury against West Ham during their 4-1 win. The Spurs captain had a great game and was involved in two of the four goals they scored against the Hammers.
However, he suffered a thigh problem after the game which saw him miss matches against AZ Alkmaar, Crystal Palace and Manchester City.
He was back for the Aston Villa game this past weekend and contributed with a stunning assist for the equaliser.
Son remains a key player for Tottenham and despite his age, he has continued to perform at the highest level for Spurs.
He has stepped up as the club's talisman after the departure of Harry Kane, scoring 17 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League last season. This season, he has scored 3 and assisted another 3 in 7 league games so far.
Whether the club hands the player a new long-term contract on only a one-year extension remains to be seen. Regardless of their decision, he will go down as one of the best players to don a Tottenham shirt.
